Prohibiting smoking in the home is really the only way to prevent babies from being exposed to tobacco smoke, according to new research. Banning smoking in the home leads to a small but meaningful fall in infant exposure to environmental tobacco smoke, whereas less strict measures have no effect.

The researchers at the University of Warwick in the UK, conducted a survey of 314 parents living in smoking households with infants. Nearly all respondents thought tobacco smoke was harmful, yet only a small minority completely banned smoking in the home. Parents were interviewed at home about their knowledge and use of harm reduction strategies, tobacco consumption, and details of the home environment. A sample of the infant’s urine was taken to measure levels of cotinine (a by-product of nicotine) and creatinine.

Eighty-six percent of parents considered tobacco smoke harmful and 90 percent believed that infants could be protected from exposure in the home. Only one in 10 parents were unaware of any measures to reduce exposure. Although 65 percent of parents used protective measures, only 18 percent actually prohibited smoking in the home. Banning smoking in the home was associated with a small but significant reduction in cotinine levels, whereas less strict or no measures had no effect on exposure of infants.

Despite some limitations, these results suggest that banning smoking at home significantly reduces infant exposure to environmental tobacco smoke. Less strict measures, such as opening windows when smoking and using fans, are likely to have little effect on the exposure of infants. However, it is unclear if the fall in cotinine levels actually leads to any health benefits for the infants, including a lower risk of death. The new findings suggest that anything short of a total smoking ban is unlikely to help infants but this needs to be verified in a larger study with more subjects.

Hey,this is Gayatri Mendiratta,Delegate from Delhi.

There are a few amongst us who are not movie buffs and perhaps one of the most enduring images are- the Macho Hero…cigarette dangling from his lips along with a victorious smile, after beating the baddies -Or the handsome, youngster having”fun” with his friends, smoke bellowing out of his nostrils.Celluloid perhaps stands judged as a guilty party in promoting an aura around smokers.Star-striken viewers wishing to emulate the idolised stars reach out for a cigarette in the quest to be cool……. Alas!the beginning of the end.

Sadly and strangley however smoking is a practice not limited to the male gender….an intresting exerpt not only gives valid proof but also makes one wonder…What is so addictive..?

When the Irish born American femme fatale Lola Montez had her photograph taken at a Boston studio in 1851, neither she nor anyone else could foresee the future symbolic value of the cigarette as a sign of emancipation for women and the tragic development that we are now facing with women as the next wave of the tobacco epidemic.

Have you ever wondered why people who do not smoke die from the symptoms of nicotine inhalation..? passive smoking.

There is an instance, where the parents of two small children were chain smokers.Every night they played cards with their friends,in an ill-ventilated room. With smoke all around the children were constantly subjected to the carbon monoxide and both suffered from cancer. How do you justify this horrific denial of life to the innocent for the selfish pleasure of a few???

As a general rule ,while the middle -class in societies across the board frown upon the consumption of tobacco and alcohol, these were habits associated with either the rich and decadent or the poor and frustrated, the fact of the matter is that smoking amongst both genders, was and still is an acceptable practice in many parts of the world.

With the booming population explosion ,far greater medical research and the results of which are there for all to see via the net(blessing or curse ??!!??!) ther are few amongst us who today are unaware of the terrible and fatal side effects of tobacco consumption and yet continue on this path with the ill-gotten faith that “oh! this can never happen to us”…IT CAN AND IT MAY WELL BE . STOP SMOKING NOW……..it really is never too late to enjoy your life in the way your maker intended you to…..in good health.

cheers!!! Gayatri Mendiratta

With increasing number of people leading fast-paced and stressful lives, getting addicted to something that makes you feel good for a moment could be easy. But only later on do you realise the ill-effects of that addiction. We know that tobacco can make us more susceptible to diseases like cancer, but we still pick up the habit, perhaps due to cleverly marketed strategies?

The good feelings that result when an addictive drug is present, and the bad feelings when it’s absent, make breaking any addiction very difficult. Smoking is a common addiction, because it leads to changes in the brain that make people want to use it more and more.

Historically, nicotine addiction has been one of the hardest addictions to break. In fact nicotine is not only as addictive as alcohol, tea and coffee, but even more addictive then psychoactive drugs like heroin and cocaine.

As a result tobacco addiction is the second-leading cause of death in the world. Nicotine meets the criteria of a potent psychoactive drug, as you can see in the image below. Depending on nicotine at various levels, leads to addiction.

Nicotine induces euphoria, serves as a reinforcer of its use, and leads to nicotine withdrawal syndrome when it is absent. Nicotine acts a stimulant and also a depressant.

The association between depression and smoking is well-known, many times the decreased ability to quit smoking can lead the person into depression. Relapse rates of major depression are higher after smoking cessation.

What are the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal?

Irritability

Impatience

Hostility

Anxiety

Depressed mood

Difficulty concentrating

Restlessness

Decreased heart rate

Increased appetite or weight gain

Quitting an addiction might sound difficult, but if you want to lead a happy life without the intake, then the time is now, tomorrow may be too late!

For years, people who wanted to speak out against tobacco have remained silent because they never knew where to voice their opinions.
